Indira Mclean and Marianne Rushton, Bolton College

Teaching infection awareness via English lesson for non-native English speakers

Infection is major cause of death in developing countries yet can often be prevented by improving awareness and education. Language can be a barrier. To address this Indira and Marianne, both experienced ESOL teachers, worked with leading immunologists in the University’s Faculty of Life Sciences to create English and science literacy resources for use in community groups in ESOL lessons to improve science literacy, particularly the understanding of infection and infection transmission in immigrant communities in the UK.

A six-lesson course was trialled in Bolton College then expanded to include more students. Participants are enthusiastic about the course and report improved confidence in health awareness and the ability to use medical terms.
