Ramaden Tent Project

Ramadan Tent Project (RTP) has run in Manchester for three years. RTP aims to create positive social change by bringing together communities and fostering interfaith dialogue. The event brings together hundreds of staff, students and members of the public. 2015 saw the inclusion of an art exhibition and local spoken word artists appeared, as did the Bishop of Manchester and The University of Manchester Chancellor, Lemn Sissay. By fostering interfaith dialogue, bringing together communities and promoting positive images of students as active citizens involved in social change, RTP hopes to encourage its visitors to be socially responsible citizens.

Outstanding contribution to widening participation (student)

Muhammad llyas Nagdee School of Arts, Languages and Cultures

Sustained commitment to widening participation work over a period of time

Illyas has been a tireless and passionate participant in widening participation work at the University ever since he became a student three years ago. He has worked at hundreds of events, speaking to thousands of young people about the University, providing advice and support in their application to HE. Illyas has mentored Year 10 students, worked on summer schools and consulted on the development of presentations and workshops for other schemes such as Manchester Higher and the Mentoring Scheme. Illyas has also given recruitment talks for the flagship post-16 programme, the Manchester Access Programme (MAP) which he undertook himself prior to coming to University.

Ilyas says: “Winning two Making a Difference Awards was the perfect ending to my time as a Student at the University of Manchester. It meant I was recognised for the many activities I took part in during my time from hundreds of working in Widening Participation to bringing hundreds of members in the community down to Ramadan Tent. They made me reflect on my time in Manchester and that I truly made the best of it and that I made a difference.”
