Madagascar Medical Expedition Team: James Penney, Hannah Russell, Anthony Howe, Cortland Linder, Stephen Spencer from Manchester Medical School

The team funded and undertook an expedition to the Marolambo region of Madagascar to investigate and provide education about the infection Schistosomiasis: a parasitic disease, second only to Malaria in terms of global socioeconomic burden, with a high mortality rate.

The team found a high prevalence of the disease in the area with 94% of children infected. Drugs for treatment are cheap but do not prevent re-infection, thus it is critical to educate to change health practices. Children were treated and an education programme was delivered. The data was shared with the Malagasy Ministry of Health in an effort to instigate mass-treatment.
