Give As You Earn

The University’s Give As You Earn (GAYE) Scheme in conjunction with the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) enables University staff to donate to their favourite charity on a regular or one-off basis by automatic deductions from their monthly pay.

Unlike other ways of giving the chosen charity receives the net gift plus the tax that would have been paid on it. For example, if people choose to donate £10.00 a month to the charity it will only cost £8 for a Basic Rate (20%) tax payer and £6.00 for a Higher Rate (40%) tax payer.

This Give As You Earn Donating Table gives examples of donation amounts and how they would be boosted for charities depending on the tax status.

GAYE benefits charities as they automatically receive the donation giving them regular financial support and they avoid the added administrative burden of collecting Gift Aid. This helps smaller charities in particular, as many do not have the resource to claim back Gift Aid.

CAF has a guide to savvy charitable giving to help people decide how to make contributions to charity in a way that suits them best and University staff can sign up via the Charities Aid Foundation link.

The generosity of University staff has led to a Payroll Giving Quality Mark Bronze Award. This is given to organisations where 1% of employees are participating in a payroll giving scheme.
