Oxford Road has changed – The evolution is now complete

Tue, 30 May 2017 13:32:00 BST

The transformation of Oxford Road means one of Manchester’s most recognisable roads, and one of Europe’s busiest bus routes, is now a more pleasant and greener environment for everyone.

Whether you catch the bus, drive, cycle or walk the changes require everyone who uses it to think and act differently.

Everyone needs to play their part and know how the changes affect them. Here are some of the things you need to think about when using the new-look Oxford Road.

As well as wider pavements, you’ll notice new ‘Dutch-style’ cycle lanes now run on either side of the road as well as behind each bus stop.

Each bus stop has a cycle bypass lane which features a zebra crossing, so when getting to or from your stop please wait for cyclists to stop at the zebra before stepping out, just as you would wait for traffic at any other crossing like this.

The new ‘Dutch-style’ cycle lanes are now a key part of Oxford Road. They’ve been put in to make it safer for cyclists and to encourage people of all abilities to give cycling a go.

More confident cyclists may still want to use the road but for those who want to use the cycle lanes, please remember to keep an eye out for pedestrians crossing to and from bus stops.

At the zebra crossings you need to stop to let pedestrians cross as they have right of way.

General traffic is now prohibited from travelling through new ‘bus gates’ on Oxford Road, which restrict access to sections of the corridor between Hathersage Road and Portland Street. These gates are in force between 6am and 9pm, 7 days a-week and make travelling by bus, cycle and on foot easier and quicker.

Motorists should use Upper Brook Street when heading into or out of the city centre. You can view a handy map which will help you get around.

TfGM have created a short video to explain the changes further, watch it here.
