PhD student selected for Antarctic expedition

Women are underrepresented in science, especially in leadership positions. Madeleine Hann, a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography, has been selected for an Antarctic expedition aiming to equip women in science with the skills and network to reach global leadership positions. As the youngest of 80 women from 27 different countries, Madeleine, with four others, will represent the UK on this unprecedented leadership training programme. Madeleine is also the first woman from The University of Manchester to be selected for this training. During the three week voyage, Madeleine will learn from mentors such as Christiana Figueres, the leader of the Paris Agreement, as well as sharing her expertise in geography.

On her return from the expedition, Madeleine will continue to act as a mentor for women taking part in future expeditions. She will also be able to share best practice, knowledge, skills and stories she has gained from the diversity of voices on the ship. Madeleine will set sail on the third expedition of this kind. There will be seven further expeditions which are open to any self-defining woman with a background in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine).

To take part in this leadership training program, Madeleine, with support from the Division of Development and Alumni Relations, is running a crowdfunding campaign throughout November on The University of Manchester’s crowdfunding platform. You can support Madeleine to become a future leader in science.
