10,000 Actions takes home Sustainability Impact Award

The University’s environmental sustainability initiative, 10,000 Actions, has won an IEMA Sustainability Impact Award. IEMA (The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment), the largest global professional body for environmental practitioners, established the awards to recognise the people and businesses that are helping to make the world more sustainable. 10,000 Actions – which encourages staff to make small commitments to ultimately impact the world’s greatest challenges – was triumphant in the Sustainability Campaign category.

The judges were particularly impressed with the outcomes and scope of the programme, commenting: “This project developed an effective and innovative approach to engagement and communication, which delivered tangible outcomes across a wide range of sustainability issues. The approach also has the potential to generate an extensive legacy if rolled out to other interested stakeholders.”

10,000 Actions overcame competition from seven other campaigns within the category, including entries from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Keep Britain Tidy. Since the initial challenge of every member of staff performing at least one action on sustainability, staff have committed to over 26,000 actions, with over 3,500 of them completed. Positive outcomes from these actions include reduced sick days by encouraging active travel and smarter driver training which has saved over £40,000 in staff fuel costs.
