Social Responsibility

Multilingual Manchester

Multilingual Manchester promotes awareness of language diversity across the city and beyond, studying the practical challenges and the immense opportunities that language diversity brings. Over 150 languages are spoken across the Greater Manchester area and almost half of all school pupils have a home language other than English.

The teaching, research and outreach undertaken are inspired by the current issues raised by communities, who strive to ensure equality of access to services as well as the maintenance of Manchester’s rich array of home languages. Work is carried out with local government, healthcare providers, police and emergency services, schools and community initiatives to develop good practice, address language barriers and co-produce research.

Our numerous languages are not a barrier, but a rich resource which holds powerful potential on a local and global scale.Alex Robertson Multilingual Manchester Project Manager
