Breaking one record is enough cause for celebration, but at this year’s Student Volunteering Week, the University’s and Students’ Union volunteering teams have been celebrating more than one milestone! Discover how our students have made a difference in the community:

Over 15,000 volunteering hours registered

Students have exceeded our target and registered 15,294 community volunteering hours so far this academic year on Volunteer Hub! Throughout the celebrations, the Students’ Union had a totalizer on display to count-up the hours and show the difference our student volunteers are having in the community.

167 students turn up to ‘Big Volunteer Day’

The mass action volunteer project ‘Big Volunteer Day’ also saw record breaking numbers of students. Across the day, 167 students volunteered across Moss Side and Hulme, helping tidy up and green up multiple community spaces. That’s an incredible 400 hours of volunteering in just one day! This mammoth effort now means local older residents and the wider community can enjoy their outdoor spaces again.

Three sell out events

That’s not all – as well as Big Volunteer Day, hundreds of students also participated in a range of volunteering events and activities. Students created cheerful post which was sent to children who are unwell via the charity Post Pals, joined gardening workshops at Whitworth Park and the Students’ Union, plus much, much more.

Over 1,900 ecards sent to thank students

An incredible 1,932 ecards and vouchers were sent to students to say thank you for their commitment to volunteering throughout their studies. Watch the ‘Thank You’ video from Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burham, and some of the organisations involved.
