Team Rwanda: Flagship overseas volunteer program returns

After two years of remote volunteering, the University’s flagship overseas volunteering project, Team Rwanda, is due to go ahead this summer.

This exciting partnership project between the University, Azizi Life and University of Rwanda, will see a group of students travel to Rwanda to volunteer for a month on community research, digital media and enterprise projects, supporting local artisans and communities.

Emma Richardson, Volunteering and Community Engagement Consultant says: “After being paused for so long, it’s really exciting that international volunteering is finally up and running again. Although we were able to develop a valuable remote volunteering alternative during the pandemic, nothing beats volunteering in person overseas, especially since so many students have missed out on valuable travel and intercultural opportunities in that time. We can’t wait to be back!”

Team Rwanda is aimed at students who are from a widening participation background. This is being done in a bid to rebalance the range of experiences available to those where self-funded travel, gap years and volunteering is far less common. This once in a lifetime volunteering opportunity will also give students the chance to gain valuable skills, develop their inter-cultural awareness and enhance their employability.
