Between the 18 and 22 February, academics and students across the University of Manchester will work together and collaborate on projects as part of Teach-In week. This NUS environmental initiative, encourages lecturers across all universities to raise awareness of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and use their lecture time to share this with all students.

Here at the Univesity of Manchester, we want to focus specifically on environmental sustainability. We have developed and created materials and resources for staff and students to present in their lectures and produced the following list of suggestions about things you could do for Teach-In Week:

• Focus on the sustainability dimensions of your lecture, tutorial or seminar during the week and include a discussion or Q&A at the end around this topic.
• Environmental societies (such as People & Planet, Energy & Environment Society, Tree Musketeers, Extinction Rebellion Manchester Students, etc.) could offer a 5-10 minute ‘shout-out’ to promote their work at end of your lecture.
• Academics include prepared slides, of their choice, to present in their classes, with specific calls to action (resources for this available)
• Students develop, in a group or on their own, a full lecture, tutorial or seminar on the environmental issues that matter to them, that are relevant to their course, or that are hot-topic news.
• Academics use their classes to train students in Carbon Literacy, using prepared materials.
• Academics develop their own lectures or seminars on environmental sustainability, in whatever way they see fit, and relevant to the topic in which they teach.
• Work with other academics and students to develop unique lectures and seminars based on key issues surrounding sustainability or to promote environmental projects on campus.

There are drop-in sessions every Tuesday 3-4pm between 29 January and 12 February, lead by students and academics to help you develop materials and to provide you with useful resources.
