'Light up MANCHESTER’ is a recent University of Manchester China Centre fundraising campaign aimed at raising money for the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust to support frontline NHS staff who are helping combat COVID-19. To date, the campaign has raised more than £1,500 and provided 10,000 medical masks since launching in April during the UK lockdown. It has reached nearly 100 Centre staff and alumni across China.

The interactive fundraising campaign has reached nearly 100 Centre staff and attracted over 3,000 views.

The landing page begins with our President and Vice Chancellor, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell’s warm message sent to our University community in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. It invites viewers to look at 10 photos of the China Centre, the University and the Manchester community to prompt them to recall their good memories of Manchester. To reflect the current unprecedented time, viewers are shown the photos in black and white then urged to click on each photo to 'light up' and bring back the colour, showing their support to the community. The idea behind this is to encourage all alumni to rally together with hope to come together to fight against the pandemic as light casts away the darkness and we look forward to the day when our beautiful community is filled with students, staff and families once again.

One alumnus said the campaign: “Helped a lot. All the beautiful memories boosted the spirit and increased a sense of belonging after being separated from fellow classmates and friends for so long."
