Powering transformation

Manchester pupils use technology to help overcome social issues by ‘Powering Transformation’

Pupils from across Greater Manchester were ‘Powering Transformation’ at Alliance Manchester Business School from 11-15 June 2018, with the help of the Transformation Trust and Dell.

Students from ten schools – Albion Academy, Burnage Academy for Boys, Manchester Enterprise Academy, Levenshulme High School, Wardle Academy, Co-op Academy Failsworth, Whalley Range High School, Manchester Health Academy, Cooperative Academy of Manchester and St Matthews Roman Catholic High School – have been taking part in the workshops, developed by the Transformation Trust and supported by Dell.

The Transformation Trust is a national education charity dedicated to opening up opportunities to students throughout the country, providing a range of enrichment activities to the most disadvantaged schools in the country, to maximise students’ academic attainment and professional aspirations.

Powering Transformation is aimed at raising aspirations, supporting engagement with higher education and encouraging responsible use of technology. The programme provides students with what is likely their first insight into higher education, while demonstrating the potential for technology to provide a creative and interesting way to overcome pertinent issues. Key throughout the programme is the notion that young people and students themselves can be the real agents of social change.

The week’s programme, hosted by Alliance Manchester Business School, gave 300 local year nine students the opportunity to utilise technology to engage with the world. In groups of teams, the students created effective technological designs, which can help to overcome a social problem.
