The United Nation’s annual global Human Development Report compares progress in human development across all countries in health, education and income. This human development report for Greater Manchester, prepared by the University of Manchester, mirrors the UN’s approach and provides new and innovative indices for comparing human development in Greater Manchester and its constituent local authorities compared to a national benchmark. It considers the challenges of human development not only for Greater Manchester‘s overall population but also at six key life stages, from early years through to retirement and old age.

The report is very timely. Just as Greater Manchester moves into a new stage of devolution with the appointment of its first mayor, the report findings will contribute to current debates on how Greater Manchester can develop a new, more inclusive and people-centred approach to policy-making to address the very high degree of depriva on in the area.
