Students’ Union buddy scheme is now open

We recognise this is a really difficult time for many of our students, especially those who are isolating or are new to Manchester and can’t meet people easily due to COVID-19 restrictions.

As a response our Students’ Union (SU) have set up the SU Buddy Scheme. They pair participants with a student volunteer who will get in touch for weekly phone or video calls, providing some social contact and the chance to make a new friend.

Signing up for a Buddy

The scheme is aimed at anyone feeling isolated, struggling with University life because of the pandemic, or who would just like to make a new friend. The Students’ Union pair people up with a ‘peer buddy’ who will be in contact a couple of times a week to chat and check how they’re getting on. Students who might benefit from this support can SIGN UP FOR A BUDDY on the SU website.

Sign up to volunteer

The SU are looking for confident, empathetic volunteers who’d be happy to call a small number of students once or twice a week. The role provides a friendly ear and someone to check how they’re getting on. Volunteers are not expected to act as counsellors and the SU have lots of services for signposting if needed. Full training is provided and Students’ Union staff are on hand for support. Students interested in volunteering can sign up through the Volunteer Hub: SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER

Is there any other support available?

The Students’ Union and University have staff providing practical support such as food parcels for students who are isolating. More information on support can be found on Students’ Union website.

The University have also issued guidance for isolating students.
