Black Then, Black Now

On 1 October, the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Education Trust (AIU) ran the first of ‘three’ takeover days at Manchester Central Library. The programme of activities – labelled ‘Black Then, Black Now’ was conceived and facilitated by Tunde Adekoya, Director of Big People Music. It included live performances from musicians and DJs throughout the day, as well a photographic exhibition on ‘Black Victorians’ curated by Autograph ABP and free African food cooked by Yvonne Edouke and the SAWA BBQ team. The day was officially opened by Councillor Luthfur Rahman and attended by students from Chorlton High School South as well as members of the wider public.

Other events celebrating Black History month also took place at Manchester Central Library including free workshops exploring a range of Black heritage and culture. Participants were invited to paint a canvas with the digital illustrator Rakaya, take part in an African yoga session with certified teacher, Nai Davina and learn more about the art and science of hair braiding with expert, Sophia Reeves.
