Celebrating Black History with local school pupils

On 10 October colleagues from Student Recruitment and Widening Participation, the School of Arts Languages and Culture, and Creative Manchester hosted 150 pupils from Greater Manchester schools for a day to explore Black History and British society.

Our new Professor of Public History, Professor David Olusoga, kicked off the event with an inspiring and informative lecture on Black British History, Colonialism and representation in the History curriculum. After the lecture, pupils attended workshops on recording migrant oral histories, rap music as counter-narrative, and Black British activism. Feedback from pupils and teachers was extremely positive, with many attendees inspired to go off and learn more about our shared histories, in school and at home.
