Goal 4: Quality Education

As one of the world’s leading research institutions and the UK’s first university to have social responsibility as a core goal, we’re tackling the SDGs in four inter-related ways: through our research, learning and students, public engagement activity and operations.

Here’s a selection of our work addressing Goal 4.

Research

The Roundview

The Roundview, developed by University of Manchester academics through research and co-production with a range of partners, is a toolkit for sustainability thinking and learning. The toolkit offers a unique, holistic approach to counteract potential barriers to action; shifting away from overwhelm and anxiety towards hope and inspiration. Learning toolkits have been provided to libraries across Greater Manchester to engage schools and community groups. 

Centre of Excellence in Healthcare Education and Training

Kisii University, The University of Manchester, and the County Government of Kisii are working in partnership to develop a Centre of Excellence in Healthcare Education and Training (CEHET). 

This Centre will train flexible, multidisciplinary healthcare workers required to meet the evolving health needs of the local population in the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) in Western Kenya, and across the country, supporting Kenya’s goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage. 

A major challenge in Kenya is the low doctor-to-patient ratio, with only twelve (12) doctors per 100,000 people, well below the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended ratio of thirty-six (36) doctors per 100,000 people. 

This gap can only be addressed by increasing the number of healthcare professionals in training. The development of this Centre will significantly improve the availability of specialist care, reduce the number of Kenyans seeking medical treatment abroad, and increase the number of patients, primarily from other African countries, seeking care in Kenya.

 

Learning and students

Peer Support Awards

The Peer Support Awards offer an annual celebration of the incredible dedication and achievements of Peer Mentors, PASS Leaders, and Student Coordinators in the Peer Support community. The event recognises the pivotal role Peer Support plays in aiding first-year students though their transition into university life through guidance from student volunteers in higher years on the same course.

Service Learning in Pharmacy

This project involves pharmacy undergraduates delivering assessed core curriculum public engagement workshops to high school pupils. Workshops covers a variety of public health topics relevant to 14–16 year-olds such as Antibiotic Resistance, Alcohol, Diabetes, Mental Health & Sexual Health Awareness.

 

Public engagement

Klemzer in the Manchester Community

The Klezmorim of Manchester is a community klezmer musicking group organised by the co-directors of The University of Manchester Klezmer Ensemble. The project aims to bring accessible, modally diverse, and wide-reaching intercultural musicking encounters to Greater Manchester by collaborating regularly with local community groups.

Decolonise! trail at Manchester Museum

Manchester Museum has introduced a Decolonise! Trail as part of its ongoing commitment to confronting the legacies of Empire and prioritising anti-racism, equity, and justice. The trail provides a more thorough, transparent, and inclusive account of the Museum’s collections, acknowledging the realities of empire and ensuring the Museum remains a space for critical reflection and open dialogue. 

 

Operations

Partnership with Stone Group

In IT Services we have a strong commitment to reducing our impact on the environment. In a move to support local youth and promote digital equality, IT Services at the University in partnership with IT Provider, Stone Group, has donated laptops to the RAFAC 1263 (Rochdale) Squadron.

We’re unique among UK universities in having social responsibility as a core goal in our strategic plan, Our Future. Our vision for prosperous communities is to increase economic well being, develop new sectors, innovate, and improve productivity for all people and all areas of our city region. We’re using our knowledge and discovery to enhance innovation in key economic sectors of the national and regional economy through initiatives and also working in partnership and sharing our knowledge and expertise locally and nationally to advance prosperity by prioritising University engagement on national and regional economic policy developments.
