Goal 2: Operations

The University’s operational activities play a key role in our approach to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Here’s a wider showcase of our work addressing Goal 2.

University Launches £9 million Cost of Living Support for Students

In recognition of the significant challenges faced by students over rising costs, our University dedicates £9 million to provide student support. Registered students received a one-off cost-of-living payment, with full-time students receiving £170 and part-time students receiving £85, paid into their UK bank account. We also implement further assistance through cheaper food options, free microwave and hot water facilities, free showers, and free period products. Additionally, Library fines are removed, and free eBooks are provided to help students meet the costs of studying.

Community Fridge

Our student-run, campus zero waste shop, Want Not Waste, holds a community fridge.

This contains food from unsold meals offered by local business and surplus raw ingredients provided by our catering outlets.

Stocking these items combats local food waste while helping to tackle food insecurity within our own university community.

Kindling Trust

We support the Kindling Trust, a local organisation aiming to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and economic inequity, by challenging and subverting the industrial food system. We buy vegetables through Kindling’s operatives and have taken shares in Kindling Farm – a new blueprint for fair, organic and ecological farming.
