CareLoop is a digital tool developed by The University of Manchester with NHS clinicians and people with lived experience to help prevent mental health crises and relapse. A mobile app and clinician dashboard enable users to track daily wellbeing while care teams identify early warning signs and provide timely support. Clinical trials show it is safe, effective and supports preventative care, helping reduce pressure on inpatient services. Now advancing through CareLoop Health, the innovation is being adopted more widely, with NHS rollout and international pilots supporting its continued development and role in improving equitable access to care.

Researchers at Manchester’s Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering collaborated with the Chinese University of Hong Kong to explore computer-controlled 3D freeform surface weaving. This new computer-controlled weaving technology enables the creation of woven structures as 3D shapes using non-traditional material threads with high-bending stiffness.

The research looks at how the computational solution converts inputted 3D freeform surfaces into weaving operations (as W-code) to guide the operation of the system. The process has the potential to work with a number of different materials including cotton threads, conductive threads and optical fibers and could be used in the future to print materials used in the treatment of various joint issues.

The Venture Further Awards is an annual start-up competition for all students and recent graduates that offers a £100,000 prize fund. The competition introduces students to a world of support programmes, workshops, mentors and networks to grow their ideas. The entries need to be a viable and credible business proposal that has the potential to succeed. If the entry is successful, the student will be asked to pitch their business proposal to a panel of expert judges for a chance to win one of the cash prizes.

The University has launched a capability, Unit M, to rethink how it supports the region’s innovation economy. With a mandate to drive the University’s new approach to innovation, Unit M will connect and catalyse the innovation ecosystem in Manchester and the wider region to accelerate inclusive growth.

Our annual ScienceX festival is a flagship off-campus event run by our Faculty of Science and Engineering. The festival strives to inspire the upcoming generations of scientists and engineers through an array of fun and captivating workshops and activities that offer a genuine insight into science and engineering. Previous years have included science tricks to dancing robots, meteorites, building towers and making graphene.

The University of Manchester holds a Fairtrade University two-star status which recognises that we are: embedding Fairtrade into our strategy and operations; actively engaging students and staff in campaigns and education; supporting ethical procurement and supply chains; and collaborating with local and global partners to promote social justice.  

The University has opened its first zero-emissions building. After a refurbishment, Booth Street East now has the infrastructure to support zero emissions, and a new Teaching and Learning Innovation Space has been introduced. It is our first non-residential campus building to be solely heated by air-source heat pumps.
