Staff and students from the University’s Dalton Nuclear Institute discussed key nuclear energy themes with visitors to The Times Cheltenham Science Festival in June.

David Willetts MP, Minister of State for Universities and Science, gave an opening address before doors were opened to school visitors over 14 years and the general public in the ‘Area 42’ zone at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival, which ran from 4-9 June.

Postgraduate students and academics from the Institute demonstrated a nuclear reactor simulator game in the interactive science zone, and discussed a range of topics with visitors, including nuclear waste disposal, what happens at our Dalton Cumbrian Facility and the latest nuclear research developments. The Institute’s energy cards were also a hit with teachers and pupils alike.

Aneeqa Khan, a PhD student stand volunteer, said: “The experience was really enjoyable. The diverse range of visitors, in terms of age, background and knowledge, meant that I had to constantly change the methods I used to answer questions.”
