Wednesday 20 November, 4pm- 6:30pm, The University of Manchester

AIMS: An opportunity for researchers to meet with teachers interested in fostering links, and running collaborative research-led activities for secondary school and college students.

The School-University Partnerships Initiative is a three-year RCUK-funded project to create structured and strategic mechanisms for HEIs to work in partnership with secondary schools and FE colleges. This partnership working will support researchers’ direct engagement with students and bring contemporary and inspirational research contexts into formal and informal learning to enhance and enrich the curriculum.

As one of the key aims of the SUPI project is to support researchers’ direct engagement with school and college students, the SUPI team are holding a networking event at The University of Manchester on Wednesday 20 November from 4pm – 6:30pm to provide a space for researchers to meet with teachers interested in fostering links, and hosting research-led activities with their students. The event will include an overview of the SUPI project, with specific reference to collaborative projects between teachers and researchers, and with the main focus being a networking session. The expectation is that teachers and researchers will gain new contacts at the event, and come away with ideas for developing collaborative, engaging, school-based projects together.

If you are interested in coming along to this event, please complete the registration survey here by Monday 4 November: https://selectsurveys.humanities.manchester.ac.uk/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=n4LJ5l51

Researchers are asked to provide an ‘elevator pitch’ to briefly summarise their research focus to attendees, as this will be provided to teachers in advance in a handout. We would also like researchers to submit keywords about their research, to further help signpost teachers to relevant researchers. We would expect researchers to come to the event with information about their research and their areas of interest, including visual representations if possible (conference posters, images of research etc). It would be worth considering if possible how your research can link into and add value the school curriculum, however the teachers should be able to discuss this with you at the event.

If you cannot attend but are interest in the SUPI project and working with schools, please complete the above survey as there is an option to sign up to hear about further opportunities to engage with the project.

Further details about the event will be sent out to attendees in due course. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact the SUPI team on ypu@manchester.ac.uk

Note: In addition to the networking event, we are also offering training and funding opportunities to enable you to bring your ideas to fruition. The interactive workshop will take place on 21 November – aimed at researchers it explores the why, what and how of engaging with schools. Participants will then be able to apply for a small pot of seed funding to develop ideas and go into schools in January-February 2013 to deliver their activity.  For more details see: www.engagement.manchester.ac.uk/blog/?p=1174
