Embedding social value through procurement

The contribution from University spending to the local and regional economy represents an important element of the social value that we deliver. Measuring and recognising this contribution is increasingly important especially with our institutional commitment to social responsibility.

Last year the Central Procurement Office worked as part of a group of public sector bodies looking at how embedding the concept of social value within procurement activity works and the benefits that it brings. The activity was led by NetPositive Futures as a collaboration between several universities, a local council and a police force. The chance to share experiences and widen understanding was useful in shaping the University’s understanding and approach to incorporating social value within our procurement activities.

The result is a short informative report that is intended to help organisations to think about social value and develop appropriate responses within their context.
