The Bright Idea – A solar solution transforming campus energy
‘The Bright Idea’ is a landmark sustainability initiative, delivering up to 65% (58GWh) of the University’s annual electricity demand through a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (cPPA) with partner, Enviromena. In May 2025, the initiative received a Making a Difference Award for its outstanding contribution to environmental sustainability and a low carbon future.
By securing the cPPA, the project advances the University’s sustainability goals while supporting the transition to a greener national grid. Leveraging the significant purchasing power, the University has driven new renewable infrastructure, amplifying environmental impact for future staff and students.
The ‘Bright Idea’ is pivotal as it represents our largest carbon reduction effort to date, reducing our scope 1 & 2 emissions by 25% and securing up to 65% of the University’s electricity from a new 104,000-panel solar farm in Essex via a landmark corporate Power Purchase Agreement (cPPA) with Enviromena. This not only advances our zero-carbon ambitions but also adds vital renewable capacity to the UK grid, ensuring price stability and fostering ‘sector exemplar’ sustainability innovation.
This initiative will slash the University’s annual carbon emissions by 12,000 tCO₂, equivalent to powering 21,000 homes, while enhancing biodiversity through habitat improvements at the site. In terms of scale, the plant occupies over 175 acres of low-grade agricultural land, but it’s not just about infrastructure, it’s a symbol of the University’s commitment to meaningful climate action and institutional transformation.
When asked about winning a Making a Difference Award, Lee Barlow said: “Winning this award is an honour and I am truly humbled. It recognises the vision, collaboration, and determination behind a project that’s truly shaping a greener future. This recognition validates the hard work amid energy crises and geopolitical challenges and that operational and technical work can deliver lasting social impact. This accolade proves that bold ideas, when backed with purpose, really can make a difference.”
“Medebridge was energised on 1 September 2025, with the University now powering the bulk of its operations with 100% clean renewable energy. This is truly a remarkable moment for the institution, and in terms of scale, a first in the higher-education sector”.
