Sustainability performance in the University’s construction and refurbishment projects: Inclusive Community Discussion

In June, the Construction Sub-group of the Material Resources Management Group, one of the University’s key sustainability groups, hosted an interactive workshop to explore how we can better embed and track sustainability performance in the University’s construction and refurbishment projects.

Bringing together researchers, Estates colleagues, and Environmental Sustainability Advisors from the University, the event created a space for open discussion on innovative approaches to sustainability in the built environment. By using participatory tools like KETSO and The RoundView, participants explored the questions around what success could look like for sustainability at the University, future possibilities and innovations, and how can today’s challenges inform the way we design sustainability tracking indicators and processes for future campus developments.

Key themes that emerged from the workshop include:

  • The importance of early-stage integrated planning and risk assessment
  • Collaboration across stakeholders with clearly defined sustainability goals
  • Ongoing performance monitoring to support data-informed decisions
  • The role of training, awareness and knowledge sharing in driving progress

The session also featured a preview of two important new resources – including the draft Guide on Sustainable Construction for the University and the new Environmental Sustainability Tracker, designed to monitor the performance and impact of construction activities across the University.

This collaborative workshop marks an important step towards building a more sustainable, accountable, and forward-thinking campus environment.
