Our top five stories in October

Here are five highlights from our October newsletter:

We’ve launched our new Strategy 2035: From Manchester to the World, setting out a bold vision of what a great civic university means in the 21st century; creating knowledge for the public good, both locally and globally.

The University was also proud to take part in the Greater Manchester Universities Priority Launch, working alongside the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and our regional partners to maximise our shared impact across the city region.

We’ve relaunched our Directory of Activities microsite; a searchable hub showcasing how our research, teaching, and public engagement and operations contribute to all 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Searches can be refined based on location, our social responsibility priorities, University functions, SDG goals and by keywords.

As we mark 75 years since Alan Turing’s Turing Test, which posed the groundbreaking question “Can machines think?”, we’re celebrating Manchester’s ongoing leadership in artificial intelligence. With more than 1,600 researchers tackling real-world challenges and pioneering centres like the Centre for AI Fundamentals and Unit M, we continue to shape the future of AI for Manchester, the UK, and the world.

Finally, we’re delighted to announce the appointment of Professor John Holden as Vice-President for Civic Engagement and Innovation. In his short film featured in this month’s newsletter, Professor Holden shares how he will work in partnership with local, regional, and national stakeholders to drive our strategic vision for civic engagement and innovation.
