The Museum of Medicine and Health’s (MMH) is the University of Manchester’s collection of instruments and equipment from the history of teaching and practicing healthcare in Manchester. The MMH’s digital exhibition Instruments of Change has gained new additions from University postgraduate students, Xiyu Chen and Jiangzheng Li, through the University’s Institute of Cultural Practices (ICP). 

The ICP offers a range of placements based in arts and cultural organisations in Manchester, which are a great way to learn in the workplace and gain a positive experience, contacts and useful examples for use in future job applications. One of the benefits of doing a placement with the MMH is the ability for those students to demonstrate close work with a science-based collection.

Embedded in the University’s Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health the collection is directed with an interest in teaching and learning through Dr Harriet Palfreyman in the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine.

Two new stories, Seeing Within and the Modern Apothecary, reveal histories and reflections drawing on digitised collections hosted by special collections at the University of Manchester Libraries and Manchester Digital Collections.

Instruments of Change as an online exhibition was created as a legacy of a previous exhibition space now repurposed in the foyer of the Stopford Building.
