Developing disaster resilience with secondary school students
How do you prepare for an impending Atlantic hurricane and manage a climate-warmed future? Over 100 secondary school students from Manchester faced these challenging questions as part of the recent the University’s Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) Young Persons in Humanitarian and Disasters conference.
Facilitated by Dr Martin Parham and the University’s School of Arts Languages and Culture support teams, HCRI students led simulations guiding the students through simulated events – designing social media posts to warn of the impending storm, role-playing stakeholders managing the hurricane impact and organising aid. The success of the event promoted work of HCRI and helped further develop disaster risk in the secondary school curriculum.
