Student Volunteering week is back for 2024
Taking place in February, Student Volunteering Week is a joint initiative between the University of Manchester’s Volunteering and Awards Team and the Students’ Union. It aims to celebrate our student volunteers for all their amazing work over the past 12 months, including with their peers, in the local community and beyond.
One of the highlights of Student Volunteering Week is Big Volunteer Day, our annual mass action volunteering event. On Valentine’s Day, Wednesday 14 February, we’ll be encouraging students to ‘Love Fallowfield’ by being out in force volunteering to green up (and clean up) neighbourhoods across Fallowfield. Working in partnership with Manchester City Council, Manchester Student Homes and Braemar and Brailsford Residents Association, the project aims to benefit everyone living and working in Fallowfield, as well as helping the local biodiversity and wildlife.
Throughout the week we have a wide variety of activities available for students to get involved in. This includes helping medics in Uganda map areas so that rural communities receive essential medical resources, and making cards for poorly children. Students can also support a new Baby Bank that has been set up in Withington to help lower income families who may be struggling with the cost of living crisis. The Bank has already received lots of donations, so our students will be sorting the donations, building flat pack furniture and painting a room to ensure it’s ready for opening.
As well as a busy week of volunteering activities, students will be able to go to the Students’ Union ‘Get into Volunteering Fair’ to find out about more volunteering opportunities. We will also be hosting information sessions about international volunteering opportunities and a Stellify drop in.
Help us give shout outs to students who have volunteered this year by tagging our social media channels @uomvolunteering and spread the love for volunteering.
