Trans Day of Remembrance

On Thursday, 20 November the University will observe the international Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR). TDOR was started in 1999 to memorialise those who have lost their lives due to transphobia and anti-transgender violence. This day is important to the trans community as we come together to remember those we have lost, as well as to bring awareness to the dangers faced by trans people due to transphobic violence. Every year in Manchester, a candlelit vigil is held in Sackville gardens, by canal street, to help commemorate trans people who have lost their lives.

This year, the University’s TIN-Bee Network (Trans, Intersexed, Non-binary) will be attending the vigil as a group and invite anyone who wishes to attend to meet us to talk and socialise before the vigil. We will be meeting at University Place on Oxford Road at 5pm and heading somewhere warm near to Sackville gardens to have some time to chat before the vigil begins.

Arrival at the vigil is at 6:30pm and it will begin at 7:00 pm. During the vigil candles will be lit and there will be a service of speakers and performers. We welcome anyone to join, whether you are a part of the community or not, to help us remember those who have passed.

The Univeristy of Manchester’s TIN-Bee Network is a part of the LGBT+ Bee Proud Network, open to all staff who identify as Trans, Intersex or Non-binary.

  • University of Manchester staff can join the network by contacting TIN-Bee@manchester.ac.uk.
  • All membership is private and confidential.
  • The TIN-BEE Network host fortnightly social lunches, as well as other opportunities to get involved in promoting equality and trans and intersex inclusion at the University.
