The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre and Education Trust in partnership with Manchester Libraries

The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre is an open access library specialising in the study of race, ethnicity and migration. It is part of the University of Manchester, but is housed in Manchester Central Library.

The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Education Trust, a registered charity supported by Manchester City Council, works out of the RACE Centre undertaking outreach and education work with local communities.

The RACE Centre and the Trust work closely together on many projects, including activities such as the Black History Month Programme.

We Are Carnival! 

To mark the city’s celebrations of 50 years of Manchester’s Caribbean Carnival we have a series of free events for Black History Month at Manchester Central Library. 

History of Carnival Workshops by Linford Sweeney 

Wednesday 5 October, 5.30-7.30pm, for adults – suitable for age 14+  

Wednesday 26 October, 2-4pm, for families – suitable for age 10+  

Learn about how established African-Caribbean communities transferred the traditions associated with carnival to Manchester as we explore the roots of the different aspects of carnival with Linford Sweeney, noted Black History Educator and Researcher.

Black History Month: We Are Carnival! Party 

Thursday 27 October, 2pm -7pm, Performance Space 

Explore historical carnival memories through archives via an exhibition with film provided by North West Film Archive and music by Manchester Carnival affiliated DJ and host Kemoy Walker. The event includes a family arts workshop by local artist Tina Ramos Ekongo, spoken word performances by Young Identity and delicious Caribbean food courtesy of Buzzrocks Caribbean Restaurant.
