International Photography Competition 2021
The UK-China International Photography Competition, run by the Manchester China Institute and Creative Manchester, is back for the third year running.
The competition, which promotes mutual understanding in UK-China relations through the celebration of our common humanity, is this year themed around the question, ‘What does caring mean to you?’
In the competition, entrants are asked to use smartphone cameras (no professional photography) to capture a moment associated with caring for others. This competition is free to enter. Any resident in the UK or in China may participate and their photo should also have been taken in either the UK or China during in 2021.
The competition launched on Monday, 1 March and closes on Monday, 3 May at 11.59pm GMT. The top 30 photos selected will be printed and exhibited at an international arts space from 7-27 June 2021. There will be a vote for the People’s Choice Award during the exhibition, with the winning entries announced on 27 June 2021 at an awards ceremony.

- Best UK Submission: £1,000
- Best China Submission: £1,000 [¥8,888]
- People’s Choice: £500 [¥4,500]
The judging panel includes:
- Michael Wood, Historian and Broadcaster and Professor of Public History at The University of Manchester;
- Zoe Dunbar, Director at the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art;
- Rupert Cox, Professor of Social Anthropology at The University of Manchester;
- Ian Scott, Director for Social Responsibility and Internationalisation in the School of Arts Languages and Cultures;
- Wenny Teo, Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art, The Courtauld Institute.
