The Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health’s new ‘Instruments of Change’ display was launched by the Interim Vice-President and Dean, Professor Peter Clayton, earlier this month.

The exhibition comprises a collection of medical instruments from the Museum of Medicine and Health and tells the story of Manchester’s 200-year history of medical education and its collaborative research culture with the NHS, through the objects themselves. The exhibition also highlights the medical innovations discovered here in Manchester and Manchester’s role in policy development and social change.

At the launch Professor Clayton introduced the history of the collection and highlighted its importance in enhancing the medical curriculum, commenting: “Through the dedication of our staff, students and our incredibly skilled and committed volunteers the collection is going from strength to strength, contributing significantly to the wider University collections, used in research and teaching as well as featuring in national and international exhibitions.”

The objects on display are from the Beswick collection, established in 1973, by Charlotte Beswick, the wife of Dr Bill Beswick, Executive Dean of the Medical School at the time. The family has generously supported the installation of the exhibition and continue to support the activity of the Museum, including a programme of schools and widening participation initiatives.

The Exhibition is on display in the University’s Stopford Building foyer.
