The People & Planet University League
The 2025/26 People & Planet University League ranks 147 UK universities against 14 criteria linked to climate and social justice. In the latest ranking, The University of Manchester has jumped 40 places and we are now ranked 34th, alongside The University of Oxford. We have been ranked 1st for carbon management and we also received 100% for the environmental policy, sustainability staff and engagement categories.
Julia Durkan, Head of Environmental Sustainability, said:
“We are delighted to have made such a significant improvement in the People & Planet University League, recognising our continued ambition and performance against our environmental commitments. This progress reflects the dedication of colleagues and students across the whole University, as we embed sustainability throughout teaching and learning, research and innovation, civic engagement and our operations. It is truly a team effort, and we want to thank everyone whose hard work and commitment have contributed to this success. This recognition reinforces that the actions we are taking today are meaningfully shaping a more sustainable future for Manchester and beyond.”
This improved ranking reflects recent achievements such as powering our campus from a new solar farm and launching our No Time To Waste initiative.
