Respiratory Month 2026: Innovation in every breath

Throughout September, the University’s Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health is shining a spotlight on respiratory research at The University of Manchester through our Innovation in every breath campaign.

September is a timely moment to focus on respiratory health. As the weather changes, people spend more time indoors and communities come back together after the summer, including with the start of the new University term. This can contribute to the seasonal rise in respiratory illnesses, making it an important time to raise awareness ahead of the colder months, when respiratory conditions can place greater pressure on individuals, health services and wider communities.

Across the month, we are showcasing our research spanning discovery, clinical care and population health, from understanding the factors that influence disease to developing new approaches to diagnosis, treatment and care.

We are also highlighting the people behind this work and exploring how social, environmental and occupational factors can shape respiratory health and contribute to inequalities between communities.

Alongside this, the campaign features new approaches, technologies and therapies being developed and tested across respiratory and critical care research, demonstrating the role innovation can play in responding to complex health challenges.

Together, these stories provide a snapshot of the expertise across the University and show how our research is helping to deepen understanding, address inequalities and improve respiratory care.
