Celebrating the success of ‘It’s In Our Nature’ month

Throughout April, the University shone a spotlight on nature and biodiversity, running more than 20 events to raise awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability.

A standout moment came when 40 staff members took part in a ‘Yoga in Nature’ session led by experienced teacher Karon Mee. Inspired by natural cycles and cultural traditions, the gentle practice included breathwork, visualisation and sound. With sunny skies overhead, the outdoor session was warmly received by all.

Later that afternoon, a group of dedicated students and staff joined a litter pick in Whitworth Park, as part of the Great British Spring Clean, a national initiative led by Keep Britain Tidy. Together, they collected ten bags of waste, recycling plastic, cardboard and metal appropriately on campus.

The Firs Botanical Grounds also welcomed over 200 visitors with a series of open days, including students, staff, alumni and the local public. The Firs Environmental Research Station is home to University’s Research Greenhouse facility, Atmospheric Supersite, Outdoor experimental area, its historic Living Plant Collections and gardens. Supporting research, teaching and outreach across a broad range of environmental topics, find out more here. They have received strong support and ideas from the public as it explores plans to become a University Botanical Garden.

Other activities included an urban nature walk along the Ardwick green route, snapping the sights and sounds of nature on the iNaturalist app. As well as a screening of Living Proof: A Climate Story followed by a panel discussion.

Throughout the month, the environmental sustainability team also ran a photo competition, encouraging staff and students to capture images of local plants and animals, wherever they might be. With over 50 entries and over 200 votes cast, congratulations go to Tiasa, who won a terrarium workshop at a local Manchester plant shop and a Food on campus voucher.

Thank you to all the staff, students and volunteers who gave their time to make these events possible.
