The University’s IT Directorate launches three-year plan for sustainability

The University’s new three-year plan for more sustainable IT is now live on the IT Services website.

The plan sets out the goals and priorities that will help the IT Directorate support the University’s wider Environmental Sustainability ambitions.

John Vass-de-Zomba, head of Environmental Sustainability in IT has stated that; As the University becomes increasingly digital, it is more important than ever that we address the environmental impact of IT in a clear and measurable way.”

The University recognises the need to act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, tackle climate change and prevent ecological harm. Clear targets have already been set for eliminating the emissions the University is responsible for, alongside wider environmental goals such as responsible consumption and valuing nature.

These ambitions are reflected in the University’s soon-to-be-refreshed Environmental Sustainability strategy, and the new IT Environmental Sustainability Plan shows how IT Services will contribute to that work in practice.

PJ Hemmaway, Chief Information Officer said; “Environmental sustainability is an integral part of how ITS unlocks potential through digital transformation in a socially responsible way. The IT Environmental Sustainability Plan will turn our priorities into meaningful action and impact. Together, we will shape a future where technology unlocks potential while minimising the environmental impact of the technologies we use to achieve this.”

Sustainability in IT is important as it affects the environment in many ways. Electricity use from digital technology is one of the fastest-rising sources of emissions, while e-waste is now the fastest-growing waste stream globally. As a result, reducing energy use, minimising waste and making more environmentally responsible technology choices are therefore central to delivering excellent IT services in a sustainable way.

By embedding sustainability into processes, governance and technology, the Directorate will help position the University as a global leader in sustainable IT.
