JUST Centre launch
Bringing together expertise for just sustainability
The launch of the JUST Centre (Joined-Up Sustainability Transformations) marked a significant step toward sustainability and social justice. Hosted by Professors Sherilyn MacGregor (Centre Director) and Matthew Paterson (Deputy Director) the two-day event gathered 25 researchers across Northern England and representatives from the Institute for Community Studies.
Supported by the University of Manchester, the event culminated in a public launch at the People’s History Museum, where over 150 attendees from local government, business, academia, and civil society celebrated the occasion.
The JUST Centre’s mission: a people-centered approach
The JUST Centre ensures that no community is left behind in the UK’s net-zero transition. Focusing on five key regions – Yorkshire, Cumbria, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Tyneside – it collaborates with local communities to develop practical, equity-driven solutions.
Professor MacGregor emphasized the need to: “decarbonize quickly, but without leaving whole regions or communities behind,” highlighting the Centre’s role in bridging gaps between policy, research, and grassroots action.
Showcasing community initiatives
The launch spotlighted pioneering sustainability projects, including:
- Rossendale Valley Energy – Community-driven energy solutions.
- Climate Sisters (Wen – Women’s Environmental Network) – Gender-inclusive climate action.
- Project Collette, Green Finance Community Hub – Expanding financial access for sustainability.
- E.ON UK, Homes for Living – Improving residential energy efficiency.
Addressing barriers to a just transition
A panel featuring Nannette Youssef (Runnymede Trust) and Mandy Nyarko discussed political and social barriers to fair sustainability transitions, emphasizing systemic change and community empowerment.
