Better World Showcase

The Better World Showcase, the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s social responsibility awards, took place on Wednesday 6 February. The event celebrated staff and students who are ‘making a difference’ through projects which benefit society or the environment.

The event was hosted by Professor Martin Schröder, Dean of the Faculty and Rachel Brealey, Director of Faculty Operations, who praised the number and variety of projects and the commitment of those involved to social responsibility. Many of the judges who presented the awards commented on the high quality of the 45 nominations and how difficult this made the judging process. As a result a number of projects were highly commended in addition to those who won the award in each of the nine categories.

In total 21 outstanding projects were recognised, a full list of which can be found on the Faculty’s website.

At the event, posters of all of the excellent nominations were on display for guests to see. Along with the awards ceremony, guests enjoyed afternoon tea as well as a performance from the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science’s staff choir.

Posters of all of the projects nominated in the Better World Showcase can be viewed in the Virtual Showcase.

Better World Showcase

To recognise and communicate the outstanding social responsibility activities across the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), we have again launched the annual ‘Better World Showcase’. The aim of the Showcase is to raise awareness of the important contribution that the Faculty makes to social and environmental impact, to highlight the efforts of staff and students who are ‘making a difference’, and hopefully to inspire others to do the same.

Nominations for the Better World Showcase are now open. All staff and students who currently work or study in FSE are eligible to be nominated as are recent alumni (within the last 3 years) if their work is related to a social enterprise. More information about the categories, criteria and the nominations process is available on the Better World Showcase website.

To nominate yourself or someone else, please complete this online form. This form will ask for the details of the nominee(s), up to 200 words about the project or initiative and up to 100 words on how the nominee(s) has ‘made a difference’. There is also the option for the project to automatically be nominated for the University’s Making a Difference Awards.

Nominations must be submitted via the online form by Monday 5 November 2018. The winner in each category will be announced at the Better World Showcase celebration event which will take place on Wednesday 6 February 2019.

If you have any questions, please email Daniele Atkinson, Social Responsibility Manager, Faculty of Science and Engineering.
