Recruiting Independent Visitors to befriend looked after children and young people
Want to do something amazing in your spare time? Coram Voice are recruiting Independent Visitors (IVs) to befriend looked after children and young people in Manchester and the surrounding areas.
The University of Manchester’s widening participation team are delighted to support Coram Voice in encouraging more university staff to consider becoming an Independent Visitor for looked after children in the north west. Coram Voice support the work the WP team do with looked after children and their key influencers, most recently speaking at one of our Supporting the Supporters event, which is run collaboratively as part of the Greater Manchester Higher network. Coram Voice already have university staff acting as IVs and are really keen to encourage more staff to volunteer their time in this way.
Independent Visiting is a fantastic and unique provision which enables people to play a positive role in the life of a child or young person in care with a relatively small and very flexible time commitment.
You will be important to the child who you visit and befriend and will provide a listening ear and do fun activities with them on a monthly basis approximately. You will receive full training, support for yourself and be put in touch with other Independent Visitors. You will also receive expenses. The biggest reward, however, is knowing that you are giving a child or young person the chance to develop a meaningful and long-lasting relationship and meet their full potential.
Corum Voice are particularly interested to hear from males and people from black minority ethnic groups who are under-represented in the service. If you are interested or want to know more, please get in touch with Louise, the Independent Visitor Coordinator, at Louise.little@coramvoice.org.uk or call 0161 226 0116.
You can also find out more about the role and apply through the Coram Voice website.
