The University is hosting a series of sandpit events in Autumn/Winter 2021-22, as part of our partnership with the The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s National Institute for Data Science and AI.

These events, developed by the University’s Digital Futures platform, are open to registrations from academia, public, private and third sector participants and could be of interest to anyone who would like to explore how data science and artificial intelligence could play a role in improving analysis, development and outcomes in their areas of interest.

During these sandpit events, academic and non-academic participants will work together to develop proposals around a range of topics. A number of projects devised at these sandpits will be awarded funding to cover research costs for six-month feasibility studies led by a researcher from The University of Manchester.

The Sustainability sandpit (17 & 18 November) will explore and develop projects in a broad range of sustainability topics including (but not limited to):

• Sustainable consumption
• Sustainable production and manufacturing
• Sustainable employment
• Sustainable planning
• Sustainable transport

The Digital Twins sandpit (1 & 2 December) will devise projects where digital twinning – using real-world data to model processes and systems and predict potential outcomes – can be applied across a range of domains including (but not limited to):

• Environment
• Healthcare
• Planning
• Transportation
