Student Volunteering Week

The 11-19 February sees the return of the University’s Student Volunteering Week – a national celebration of all things volunteering. The University of Manchester and University of Manchester Students’ Union have teamed up again to recognise our student volunteers and to encourage those who don’t already volunteer, to give it a go.

Wednesday 13 February is our Big Volunteer Day! This year we will be cleaning, greening and brightening up alleys in Moss Side. Take a look at this video to see what we got up to in a previously!

Across Student Volunteering Week there will also be a variety of information sessions and opportunities to get advice about volunteering both locally and overseas, so that any student can give volunteering a go and find the perfect opportunity for them.

During the week we’ll also be distributing around 2,700 thank you cards and badges to show our appreciation to all of our incredible volunteers. We will be encouraging students and staff to share their ‘Thank Yous’ on Twitter, using the hash tag #SVW2019, so you can keep up to date with some of the students receiving cards throughout the week.

Student volunteering week

Last week, 20–26 February, was Student Volunteering Week – a week-long celebration of all things volunteering.

Throughout this national event the University and Students’ Union worked together to recognise and thank all the students who volunteer, with almost 600 students being nominated for a thank you.

Highlights included Wednesday’s Big Action Day in Ladybarn to help to clear an alleyway on Whitby Road; an event at the national Football Museum to promote volunteering opportunities; a tea dance with a group of over 80s at St Cuthbert’s Church in Withington; bag packing to fundraise for Greater Manchester Youth Network; a foodbank challenge and a range of info sessions about volunteering opportunities both locally and internationally. There were also a variety of information stalls every day in the Students’ Union so any student could find the right volunteering opportunity for them.

In total over 1,000 students have been involved in the week.
