LGBT+ History Month at The University of Manchester
In February each year, the University commemorates the contributions made by lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans (LGBT+) and other community members to society. It is a time to celebrate achievements but also to reflect on the struggles faced in the past and present time.
In 2025, the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Directorate, BeeProud (new name for ALLOUT) staff network, and Faculties hosted a series of events to bring our support to life. They hosted film screenings of ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’, ‘Carol’ and ‘Pride’ for colleagues and students. Each film highlighted what it means to be LGBT+ as the characters do their best to navigate their identities within conservative societies. In addition to norms around sexuality, the characters often find themselves facing other intersected norms around gender, race and class. The films also depict community, activism and ultimately hope for the future.
The annual history month quiz was held at The Church on Canal Street with questions on topics ranging from LGBT+ musicians to the novels of Armistead Maupin. The winning team chose to donate their cash prize to The Albert Kennedy Trust.
Bringing the month to a close, the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Directorate organised an LGBT+ history walk of the University campus. Interesting facts included the gay switchboard being setup in the 1970s in Waterloo Place.
While February has drawn to a close, LGBT+ activism and advocacy continues throughout the rest of the year.
