Manchester Museum events: celebrating culture and fostering belonging

The University’s Manchester Museum is aiming to bring communities together through its events programme, building understanding between cultures and fostering a sense of belonging.

The Lunar New Year celebration on 22 January kicked off their calendar of Museum Celebrates events in joyous fashion, during an evening of creativity and connection.

It included a spectacular lion dance, martial arts demonstrations, choral performances and craft workshops, as well as providing opportunities for visitors to engage with the Museum’s Chinese collections.

Against a backdrop of increasing polarisation, the Museum Celebrates events aim to provide a welcome, safe space for people of all ages and cultures. Built on principles of co-curation and collaboration, they’re developed in partnership with community organisations, faith leaders, charities, researchers and more.

The next event in the series is the Museum’s annual Iftar celebration on Thursday 13 March.

Before then, the Museum is hosting a screening of Dahomey on the evening of Wednesday 12 February. This documentary looks real perspectives on far-reaching issues surrounding appropriation, self- determination and restitution and is being screened as part of their work around African collections. Working with people from across the African diaspora, Manchester Museum is aiming to build knowledge around the collections they care for and make decisions on how best to use these collections for the benefit of future generations, led by communities.
