Meet Julia Durkan, Head of Environmental Sustainability

In this short film, Julia Durkan, Head of Environmental Sustainability, shares how the University is embedding environmental sustainability into every aspect of our work from teaching and learning to research and operations.

One of our recent major achievements is the new solar farm in Essex, which will supply around 65% of the University’s energy needs, enough to power approximately 21,000 homes. We have also launched the Bee Cup, a reusable cup scheme developed as part of our Environmental Sustainability strategy, to significantly reduce the number of single-use paper cups used across campus. Working alongside Manchester City Council and Manchester Metropolitan University, we run our annual Give it, Don’t Bin It initiative, which helps to reduce waste when students move out of on-campus and off-campus accommodation.

Looking forward, we have also developed CommuteUoM, a new car-sharing and travel app, as well as No Time To Waste, an app where users can earn points and win prizes for taking sustainable actions, both of which will be launched very soon. These initiatives encourage action and showcase the importance of working together to achieve our sustainability goals.
