Our new travel plan
Following a comprehensive impact assessment and review, the University has finalised its new Travel Plan, setting the direction for the next five years. This plan aligns with the Environmental Sustainability strategy and aims to reduce carbon emissions while ensuring fairness and affordability for all.
Decarbonising University-related travel
The University is taking decisive steps to lower its travel-related carbon footprint:
- Commuting: Aiming to reduce the number of colleagues commuting by car from 32% in 2023/24 to 27% by 2030. Measures include phased increases in car parking charges, a new car-sharing scheme, and improved public and active travel options.
- Business travel: The University is targeting a 50% reduction in aviation emissions compared to pre-pandemic levels by 2030. This will be supported through increased virtual meetings, encouragement of rail travel for UK and European trips, and a financial top-up scheme to cover the cost difference between air and rail travel.
- Fleet vehicles: By 2030, all University-owned vehicles will be electric, with additional EV charging points installed across campus.
Enhancing transport options and facilities
- Public transport: The free No.147 bus route has been extended to Piccadilly Station, with a trial for free travel from Victoria Station to campus. Free trial tram and train passes will also be available for car park users.
- Active travel: The Cycle to Work scheme limit has increased to £5,000, alongside free Starling hire bike minutes and active travel breakfasts to encourage walking, wheeling, and cycling.
- Electric vehicles: A salary sacrifice scheme for EVs will be introduced for staff this academic year.
Promoting health and wellbeing
- The University will continue to work with student and staff wellbeing teams to highlight the benefits of active travel.
New car park charging policy
As part of the plan, a new car park charging policy will be introduced from 30 May 2025, including a revised tariff for EV charge points.
By prioritising sustainable travel, the University is taking meaningful steps towards reducing emissions and creating a greener campus for all.
