Safely dispose of your IT kit during Amnesty Week

In support of the University’s commitment to a zero-carbon future, our IT Services held another IT Kit Amnesty, from 20 – 24 October, across the University campus.

During the week, staff and students dropped-off any unwanted electronic devices, equipment, and peripherals, whether it is personal property or the University’s. No data on the devices was viewed and were handled securely and anonymously until their data is wiped or destroyed.

The kits collected will be dealt with in the most appropriate sustainable way: reused, repurposed, or recycled.

Last year’s IT Kit Amnesty saw 1,370 devices handed in, with 40 laptops and 20 monitors retained for reuse by the University and 506 devices reused or refurbished through our partner Converge. The rest were recycled at Converge’s zero-to-landfill facility. We are hoping to do even better this year.

Did you know that owning and using electronic devices is a contributor to everyone’s carbon footprint? Recycling your old kit is just one way we can all do our bit to achieve our sustainability commitments.

  • This initiative is part of our commitment to reducing waste across campus, as detailed by our Environmental Sustainability Strategy. We aim to achieve zero direct carbon emissions by 2038 – surpassing Net Zero. To meet this, we will continue to embed sustainable practices into all systems and processes across campus.
  • Staff who would like to recycle non-IT office items, such as stationery or furniture, can visit Furniture4Reuse to find out what can be donated.
