Sustainable travel week

As a part of The University of Manchester’s Sustainable Travel Week, our Environmental Sustainability team hosted three days of engaging events. From the 14-16 October, our campus was open to anyone looking to learn more about sustainable travel initiatives in and around the University.

We hosted a Sustainable Travel Fair, where around 200 staff and students dropped by to chat with over 15 exhibitors from The Bee Network and Northern Rail to Halfords and Cycling UK, as well as key University teams, all sharing ideas for greener, cheaper, and easier ways to travel.

Our Environmental Sustainability team highlighted sustainable travel initiatives for staff and students such as the Sustainable Business Travel Top Up Fund to help with higher costs of taking the train or ferry instead of flying, our Try the Tram Scheme and the free 147 bus from our campus to Piccadilly Train Station, and our University Rewards team kindly talked through their Cycle to Work and Electric Vehicle salary sacrifice schemes.

Over at the Students’ Union, our Dr Bike drop in (in collaboration with Bee Pedal ready and Biko Bikes) helped multiple people with minor bike repairs and safety checks free of charge. The next day saw a bike maintenance workshop aimed this time at teaching minor repairs, which was equally popular. Alongside this, an organised scenic group bike ride gave participants a chance to try cycling with free minutes on Starling Bank Bikes.

We also focused on the benefits of active travel on our health and wellbeing. Our ‘yoga for active travellers’ and guided walk or wheel around our beautiful and historic trees on campus was a huge hit with around 50 participants in total. The team from UoM Sport also kindly donated free physio sessions and advice for active travellers to stay healthy, and led two group runs around the local community.
