Trash talk: Helping students to recycle

Recycling can be confusing, but our Environmental Sustainability team is working to make it easier for students to do the right thing.

Our new Trash Talks campaign aims to clear up recycling confusion by providing clear and accessible guidance for students. We’ve created a new set of resources to remove the ambiguity around what goes where. A guide to recycling on campus and a guide to recycling in halls of residence. Through online engagement on our Instagram and on campus engagement through a range of events, we aim to start a conversation about best practice when it comes to recycling.

Recycling rules can vary between councils, and for University of Manchester students, they also differ between campus and university residences. After speaking to students on campus, we found that many were unsure about which items go in each bin and where to dispose of certain waste.

To tackle this, we’ve developed an interactive waste map to help students quickly find the correct disposal points for various items, whether they’re on campus or in university accommodation. Taking a moment to put your waste in the right bin can make a big difference.

  • Explore the map and learn how you can play your part in improving recycling across campus.
