University of Manchester Physics Outreach inspiring future scientists
University of Manchester Physics Outreach (UMPO) is a student-led project that aims to increase the diversity of student participation in STEM-based subjects (primarily physics) through engaging outreach activities. These include workshops for both primary and secondary schools, and science demonstrations at markets in the form of ‘science-busking’. The project received a Making a Difference Award for its Outstanding contribution to widening participation.
UMPO’s workshops are organised using the Manchester Prioritisation Model to specifically target students from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring schools who otherwise have limited access to such opportunities and events are reached. This year they attended 16 science busking events and hosted 18 workshops, reaching over 1200 students through workshops alone.
Initiatives like UMPO are so important as they are focused on making science accessible for all. Children from underrepresented and underprivileged backgrounds often lack the resources and confidence to cultivate an interest in STEM subjects. Through fun and engaging workshops, UMPO hopes to help ignite an interest in science from an early age.
Alexandra Usher, the project’s General Manager, said: “Over the nine years UMPO has been active, we have interacted with thousands of children and families at various markets and events, and at the weekly workshops. Although many of these interactions are fleeting, we have received much positive feedback from teachers and parents, as well as many interesting (and sometimes difficult to answer) questions from pupils.”
When asked about winning a Making a Difference Award, Alexandra said: “It’s a huge honour and privilege to win this award. It is the culmination of the efforts of numerous dedicated students over a number of years, united by an interest to share our passion for physics and science with the local community. We hope UMPO is able to continue to grow and inspire more children for many years to come.”
